Shay figured it was past time that Casper met his trio of mischief makers. Cara, Bella, and Flame had earned a rep over the past five years. More importantly, they had a rep for healing. Casper was on his way, but Shay wanted Casper to experience all the excitement of being in a pod.

His little darlings sat in their cabin, ostensibly playing, as he blinked in. Shay knew better. He saw the twinkle of guilt as they exchanged glances. Saw the sleight of hand as they hid a communicator under a plump cushion.

“Hand it over.”

“Papa?”

“Cara,” Shay warned, holding his hand out.

Cara sighed but passed him the device.

“And the other one.”

She pouted, lifted one butt cheek, and gave him a second device.

“You know about Casper?”

“Well, duh!”

“Flame!”

“Sorry, dad. But we wanna meet him. He’s family.”

He repressed a smile.

“He’s been through a lot,” Shay told them.

“We’ll be gentle,” Bella assured him.

Shay hesitated for a moment, feeling a little guilty for some reason.

“If you’re gonna zap him with the mist, do me a favor?” he said, waiting until he had their full attention. “Ask him first, hmmm?”

They looked confused. “Why?” Flame wanted to know. “We’ve zapped loads of people. Nobody minded.”

“Casper’s finding his courage,” Shay said. “He’s had a tough time. I just… I think it would be good to ask him first.”

They nodded, though puzzlement reigned.

“Okay, dad,” Bella said. “What if he says no?”

Shay frowned. “Why would he?”

“Well, duh! We’ll just tell him we’re gonna gas him and he’ll be okay with that?” Flame said, rolling her eyes. Shay arched a brow at her sass. She didn’t back down. “I’m just sayin’.” She sighed. “He might be more scared by that than by us simply doing our thing, then he’ll be too grateful to worry about it.” She spread her little hands wide, palms up. “Makes sense to me.”

“Ask. First.”

He watched them blink out, shot a pleading look at the ceiling, then went after them. Little stinkers!
